Hey Guys, I Would Like To Know If Anyone Has Suggestions On Learning More Advanced Guitar. Here's Where I'm At: I Have A Good Sense Of Rythym, Play Most Basic Chords(including Bar Chords), I Started Leading A Worship Team Recently, Can Play Some Lead Parts If I Practice Enough But Don't Know How To Read Music , Don't Know Scales On The Fret Board ( What Does Diatonic And Pentatonic Mean?) I Would Like To Know The Entire Fretboard, Not Just For Leading Worship Songs But So I Can Be A " Real Good" Guitar Player! I Love The Guitar, I Love God And I Would Love To Be The Best Player I Can Be For His Glory! Where Should I Start?
I have "piddled" with guitar for years. I finally decided to start taking oficial lessons. In 4 lessons I have learned more about the instrument and how to play it than I learned in the previous 7 years on my own.
Since posting this topic I have purchased "Diatonic theory and harmony"DVD by Doug Doppler-metal head and guitar player extrordinnaire! I also got to meet him in person at Breakforth Canada in Edmonton last month and he was a great help on how to learn the basics(properly). His DVD also teaches you scales, modes etc.. so that you can learn to improvise on the guitar. Excellent teaching for anyone wanting a quality DVD for learning guitar theory! By the way, ther are no guitar teachers in my area, teaching guitar theory and advanced guitar, but thanks for the advice, it would be great to learn from someone one on one.
I've been teaching myself guitar for about 7 or 8 months now. And while I don't have much in the way of advanced ideas, I can help you out awayla ;) 1) Use Mel Bay's books. They work REALLY WELL. 2) Learn to play standing up from the start. I didn't do that, and now I can't play standing up very well. 3) Don't get frustrated when it's time to learn chords. Learning guitar isn't really that hard, but when you get to chords it gets SO FRUSTRATING. When you're self-taught it's even worse. So when you get to that part either get a teacher, or take it slow.
i've been teaching myself for about 8 months...there's nothing like trying to learn electric guitar out of an acoustic book...lol...here's a movie of me playing meant to livhttp://s63.photobucket.com/albums/h144/MicroSound27/?action=view¤t=vid.flve by switchfoot (my camera cut me off at teh end):
well if you're talking KINDS, 2. acoustic and electric, lol. but there are a LOT of different brands who make special guitars with different sounds. my dream guitar is a Gibson GS, but they're a fortune. right now i have a really, i mean REALLY cheap Austin Bazaar. i don't know what brand my acoustic is.
just don't get austin bazaar. it LOOKS promising, but mine came with a bent tuning pin, cracked body (in two places), and the frets were just barely too far out and majorly cut up my hand from playing All the Stalls Stink too much. AND, my friend's brother got the same guitar a coupla years ago, and it had the same problems. so whatever you do, don't buy anything from Austin Bazaar.
I'd really like to get a Taylor T5, from what I've read they're an awesome guitar (hollow body acoustic/electric) I've got a Taylor 410ce acoustic w/pickup and I love it, it will be a while for any new guitar, esp. the T5 since its around 2500$ !!!
